Professor Mayhew's research focuses primarily on financial statement auditors and financial reporting. He employs two different research methods to examine these topics. First, he uses experimental economics to examine incentives and institutions (i.e. rules of the game) to investigate settings that maximize auditor independence and audit quality. Second, he uses statistics to examine data from SEC filings of public companies. This second area of research examines the impact of auditor industry specialization, as well as, nonaudit fees paid to auditors on audit quality and fees. He also is conducting research on the impact of agency costs on firm valuations and performance. This research currently investigates how related party transactions impact firm valuation, and will be expanded to explore differences in agency costs in cooperatives versus stock based companies.
